Its length, fine white sand and crystal-clear water make it a perfect beach for a family day out, and it has numerous services.

Son Bou

Son Bou is one of the longest beaches in Menorca, located in the municipality of Alayor, 10 minutes from the city, 20.5 km from Mahón and only 41 km from Ciutadella, in the west of Menorca.

Son Bou is characterised by its length, it is the longest beach on the island and one of the few on the open sea. It has clear, fine sand, with a gentle slope down to clean, crystalline and shallow waters. From the shore you can see a huge reef known as “Escull de sa Galera”, a rock that gently rises above the sea. In the easternmost part of the beach, the rock walls reach between 70 and 80 metres in height. The western, gentler area has smaller cliffs, between 5 and 10 metres high, where we will find Atalis beach, a small, unspoilt and quiet cove.
The seabed of Son Bou is sandy and very homogeneous with a gentle slope that allows you to enter little by little. When the depth is already a few meters, the sand hosts one of the largest meadows of posidonia oceanica, a marine plant that indicates the excellent quality of the water. For swimmers, there is a lifeguard service.
On the other hand, visiting Son Bou is visiting a part of the history of the island. On the eastern edge of the area, a few meters from the beach, is the Paleochristian Basilica of Son Bou built in the 5th century.

At the back of the beach is the Son Bou Urbanization, separated from the beach by a sand dune known as “El prat de Son Bou”. It is also known as a Service Beach, since there we will find all kinds of bars, clothing and souvenir shops, supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies and even a water park, that is, ample leisure possibilities for tourists and vacationers.

As for access, it is easy and simple both by land and by sea. Those who wish to access by land should go to Alayor and there follow the signs that will lead them to the Son Bou urbanization, once there, they should continue until they find the totally free parking, which also has freshwater showers. For those who wish to access by boat, they should simply anchor respecting the safety distances of the bathing area, after an hour of sailing from the Port of Mahón sailing 18 nautical miles.

Do you have children? Whether you like virgin or urbanized beaches, Son Bou is undoubtedly one of the best to access with children. Its easy access by land and sea, the soft and clean sand, crystal-clear and shallow water and the numerous services it has make it a safe and pleasant beach. However, keep in mind that due to its large opening to the sea it is very exposed to strong winds from the south. In these cases, it will always be better to go to other beaches in the north.

Finally, if you want to continue walking and get lost among the rural paths of the “Camí de Cavalls” you will reach the urbanization of Santo Tomás.
